Little Dog: Turning Complex Science into Clear, Credible Stories

Founded in 2011 by Jessica Yingling, Ph.D., Little Dog Communications is a senior-led strategic communications consultancy for biotech and life sciences companies, with hubs in San Diego and Salt Lake City and clients across the global biotech ecosystem. Backed by a network of experienced communications, creative, digital, and scientific partners, the firm helps leadership teams turn complex science into clear, credible communications that support financing, partnerships, and long-term company-building.

In this Spotlight, Yingling discusses what makes Little Dog's senior, flexible client model different, a recent engagement she's proud of, the regions the firm serves, and the communications challenge she's hearing about most from clients right now.

The Spotlight

Q1. In a few sentences, what does Little Dog do, and who do you serve?

We help biotech and life sciences companies turn complex science into clear, credible communications that support company-building. We work with organizations across every stage, from early platform positioning and corporate launches to clinical, financing, partnership, and visibility milestones.

Our work spans corporate positioning, messaging, media relations, thought leadership, investor and business development communications, website and digital strategy, social media, speaker strategy, briefing materials, and issues management. Across all of it, we help companies connect the science to the strategy, and the strategy to the audiences that matter most, including investors, partners, media, patients, clinicians, and employees.

Q2. What makes your approach different from others in your space?

Little Dog brings together deep scientific understanding, biotech communications experience, and a highly senior, flexible client model. I hold a Ph.D. in biomedical research and have more than two decades of biotech PR and strategic communications experience, which lets us engage deeply with the science while keeping the message focused, accessible, and relevant to business goals.

We don't apply a one-size-fits-all agency model. Instead, we build the right team around each client and each moment, bringing in experienced partners across media, design, web, SEO, animation, crisis communications, and scientific visualization as needed. Clients get senior counsel, practical execution, and specialist support without unnecessary overhead, which is especially valuable for companies with complex platforms or emerging therapeutic areas, where the challenge isn't just visibility but helping the right audiences understand why the work matters.

Q3. What's a recent project or result you're particularly proud of?

A recent example we're proud of is helping a life sciences company sharpen its corporate narrative around a complex scientific platform ahead of major business and visibility milestones. The company had compelling science, but the story was difficult for external audiences to quickly grasp because it sat at the intersection of biology, technology, and therapeutic development.

We worked with the leadership team to clarify the company's core message, define the "why now," build materials for multiple audiences, and create a communications plan supporting investor conversations, media engagement, website development, and social media. The result was a clearer, more differentiated story that helped the company explain the impact of its work beyond the technical details, exactly the kind of shift we aim for: from communication that's technically accurate to communication that's accurate, strategic, and meaningful.

Q4. Which Big4Bio regions do you serve, and are there any you're particularly focused on right now?

We serve all Big4Bio regions and work with life sciences companies and partners across the global biotech ecosystem. Our clients are often connected to major U.S. innovation hubs, but their communications needs extend well beyond geography, reaching investors, partners, media, scientific leaders, patient communities, and other audiences shaping the future of medicine. Rather than focusing on one region, we help companies communicate clearly and credibly wherever their story needs to land, from financing and company-building moments to clinical, scientific, and market-building milestones.

Q5. What's one trend or challenge in life sciences right now that your clients are asking you about most?

One of the biggest challenges clients are asking about is how to communicate clearly and credibly in a more selective life sciences environment. Investors, partners, media, and other stakeholders want more than scientific novelty. They want to understand why a company's approach matters, what makes it differentiated, how it connects to a real unmet need, and what milestones will demonstrate progress.

At the same time, many companies are working with leaner teams and tighter budgets, which means every announcement, website update, conference presence, and social post needs to work harder. We help clients navigate this by building sharper corporate narratives, connecting science to strategy, and grounding communications in evidence, relevance, and impact. The goal isn't to overstate the story, but to make it easier to understand, more useful to key audiences, and better aligned with where the company is going.
