Company Spotlight

SciLnq: Therapeutic Antibody Development Consulting

SciLnq is a La Jolla, California-based biotechnology consulting firm, founded in 2020, that specializes in therapeutic antibody development. Led by Managing Partner Josh Nelson, the team works with emerging and growth-stage biotech companies across the United States, bringing experienced antibody development professionals into programs at the points where they matter most.

‍

In this Spotlight, SciLnq explains how its project-based model supports candidates from late discovery through CMC readiness, shares an example of a re-engineered antibody that advanced into IND-enabling studies, and discusses why developability has become a bottleneck in the AI era of antibody discovery.

The Spotlight

Q1. In a few sentences, what does your company do and who do you serve?

SciLnq helps emerging and growth-stage biotech companies turn promising antibodies into viable therapeutic candidates.

‍

Our experienced antibody development professionals work alongside sponsor teams, from candidate assessment and optimization through manufacturability and CMC readiness. We bring in the right expertise as critical developability needs arise, helping teams identify risks earlier, strengthen promising candidates, select development candidates, and transition into manufacturing.

‍

‍

Q2. What makes your approach or offering different from others in your space?

Program-specific flexibility. We can support a program at any stage, from discovery to manufacturing, and we don’t sell a one-size-fits-all “development package.” Each antibody candidate presents a different mix of developability, manufacturing, and strategic challenges.

‍

SciLnq brings in experienced professionals based on what the program actually needs, whether that means evaluating sequence liabilities, guiding optimization and re-engineering while maintaining or improving biologic potency, strengthening IP positioning, or transitioning to CMC. This tailored support reduces redundant work, accelerates timelines, and helps sponsors control overall development costs.

‍

‍

Q3. What is a recent project, engagement, or result you’re particularly proud of?

A sponsor had a promising therapeutic antibody with established animal-model data, but significant sequence liabilities put its continued development at risk.

‍

Working alongside the sponsor team, we helped identify and evaluate those liabilities, guided re-engineering and optimization decisions, and improved the candidate’s developability and path toward manufacturing. The optimized candidate advanced into IND-enabling studies, where it showed superiority over the original version when re-tested in the animal model. It also achieved manufacturing readiness and contributed to a new IP filing.

‍

It’s a strong example of how developability can decide the fate of a program: the right intervention at the right point can turn a high-risk candidate into a therapeutic candidate.

‍

‍

Q4. Which Big4Bio regions do you serve, and are there any you’re particularly focused on right now?

SciLnq supports biotech companies across all eight Big4Bio regions, with particular interest in the major hubs where emerging therapeutic antibody companies are concentrated.

‍

Our focus is less about geography and more about finding the right programs: emerging and growth-stage companies advancing therapeutic antibodies, where specialized expertise can strengthen the team and help address critical development challenges as they arise.

‍

Q5. What’s one trend or challenge in life sciences right now that your clients are asking you about most?

With the rise of strong AI-driven candidate generation platforms, finding an antibody that meets the biologic requirements for target engagement has become easier. The burden of selecting the ideal candidate has therefore shifted toward the developability phase, where expertise is difficult to access and the work has become an industry bottleneck.

‍

CDMOs offer developability services, but they typically engage later in development and aren’t structured to support discovery-stage teams evaluating dozens of potential candidates. Their pricing can also be inflexible, driven in part by highly regulated operating environments.

‍

As a result, many startup biotechs struggle to navigate antibody development challenges while staying capital efficient. SciLnq helps close that gap by providing experienced developability expertise at the stage when critical candidate selection and optimization decisions are being made.
